"They weren’t going to stop until they ended what they had started. This person would finish the job,
and I would die here. No one would ever know the truth of how I died. "
The Dead Girl Under the Bleachers is the first novel in the Craven Falls series, it follows the lives of the three main characters Laura, Rachel and Scarlet, their families, relationships and secrets. Each characters tells their story from their own perspective which allows the reader to fully immerse themselves in the Craven Falls world, build an image of each one and develop empathy to them. This is my first five star read of the year! My favourite kind of author is one who has the ability to allow you to imagine each character visually in your head, where you feel as though your in the world and creates that nail-biting tension whilst you read on to see what happens! I felt like a naughty child again as I kept saying to myself one more chapter and then reading the next two.
This a thrilling Young Adult read, it explores so many different themes including abuse, relationships, family dynamics, high school drama and cliques and more. It was a really enjoyable, easy read despite the heavy themes it explored. I felt like there was something relatable for any person in it, I love predicting the endings of books and I often manage to do so correctly. The novel starts with an excerpt and from the moment I picked it up I thought I knew where the ending was going, I was totally wrong and it just adds to the suspense and thrill reading it gave me. There are lots of shocks, twists, turns and jaw-dropping moments.
Zadunajsky is such a talented writer and I'm not sure how I've only just discovered her; throughout The Dead Girl Under the Bleachers she tells stories within stories, there are multiple layers to it yet it never becomes confusing, there were no moments on skim-reading, just a book I couldn't put down and read within a few days. I'm going to be recommending this to everyone!
