Sometimes chasing a dream can become a nightmare…
Alecia Preen is living in poverty and desperate to make a better life for herself. Having moved to a new area for new beginnings after being disowned by her family, money was fast running out. She is struggling to make ends meet.
With the intention of charging lonely men online for her services, Alecia realises she can supplement her income by being unscrupulous. In meeting Jake Parker he requests that she role-plays as a psychiatrist, but he makes her aware of an underground millionaires playground called Sordida. He warns her to stay away.
As Alecia’s curiosity gets the better of her, she is amazed by the wealth and decadence on offer. Sordida is not the club she had anticipated because behind the legendary name lurks a very dark secret. A secret that could cost her everything.
He pays by the hour and Alecia pays in ways she had never imagined.
Glimmer of Hope is a retelling of J A Andrews original erotic fiction novel Sordida, this is an erotic novel meets psychological thriller, Alecia is young women working part-time in a supermarket and trying to supplement her living through a side hustle as an escort, she meets Jake Palmer who makes her aware of Sordida a swingers club for the wealthy, Alecia desperate to escape her mundane life is then drawn into the world of Sordida, she begins working for them, over time it dawns on her there's something strange going on, but what is it? And has she made a mistake by working there?
I'm going to start off by saying that I'm not usually a fan of erotic novels, I find them to be incredibly cringey and as a rule don't read them because I know that genre is not for me, I took a chance on this as I was intrigued to know how an erotic thriller could meet psychological thriller, it turns out it is possible and J A Andrews has proven that.
The first half of the novel enlightens us to Alecia's backgrounds, her desires and how unfulfilled she's feeling in life, it's also where Jake Palmer plants the seed of Sordida in Alecia's mind, this half contains several steamy scenes although actually not that cringey! It wasn't until I was reading about how Sordida became Glimmer of Hope that I read J A Andrews had removed all sexual references in the retelling, as I read that I realised it was true which means it was a skill to still manage to create the steamy scenes, it also meant there weren't crude references throughout, it was more like tasteful Erotica (I'm not sure that's a term so I'm coining it now). The second half of the novel becomes dark, mysterious and full of twists and turns, I read the last half of the novel in one night with my jaw dropping! There were points where I thought I'd worked out what was going on, but actually there were multiple surprise layers going on. I like the first half but I loved the second half, J A Andrews is a great thriller writer, he clearly knows how and is skilled at creating tension, shocks and stories within stories which I liked.
I really liked the fiery spirit of Alecia Preen, that the novel had a strong female lead and that this continued throughout the whole novel, often writers only create a strong female lead for her to be at the mercy of everyone else continuously so I liked that Alecia remained a fighter throughout. I'm also appreciative that although the novel made many references to sex work, it was respectful and sex worker positive throughout.
The only reason I have not given this novel five stars is there were a large amount of spelling and grammar mistakes, there were also two occasions where the author had wrote the wrong character's name in a sentence. The novel and story itself are great, I just found it hard to overlook this minor issues due to the amount of them and felt it could do with another proofread.
Glimmer of Hope was an easy, enjoyable, risqué and thrilling novel. Even if you're not a fan of erotic novels (like myself) but you love a good mystery, psychological style thriller then you should definitely pick this up! The novel but especially the second half will be one that stays with me for a long time, I think I actually dreamt about Sordida the night I finished it, I was just so shocked and intrigued by all the events that happened in it!
